How We Catered Download Festival 2026: 20,000 Meals in One Weekend

Feast Streat is a UK turnkey street food catering company, and at Download Festival 2026 we ran the food court in the VIP and guest area, serving 20,000 meals across the weekend at a 100,000-capacity site. This is the full story of how we did it: the scale, the logistics, the six-hour call to feed the headliners, the honest numbers behind it, and what it actually takes to cater one of the biggest festivals in UK music. It was our first year at Download, and we filmed the whole thing — the wins, the problems, and the real figures — as an episode of our ongoing docuseries, Street Food Diaries. Here's what a festival at this scale demands from a caterer.

‍ Operating through event management agent; D&J Catering, a huge team of independents and larger caterers were responsible for the operation, but Feast Streat catered the Guest Area (VIP to you and me) at Download Festival 2026 alongside Live Nation. We were the single food operation in that area — the space directly beside the artists' compound — chosen because our food standards and presentation matched what the festival wanted for its most important guests.

Rather than a single trailer, we built a full pop-up food court: an 18-metre run of six of our in-house brands, with a six-metre kitchen and service depth behind it, backed by two 44-tonne articulated fridge and freezer trailers and a dedicated dry store. One supplier, one team, one continuous food offer — from Greek and Mexican to loaded fries, pizza, Philly cheese steaks and slow-cooked pulled meats.

Serving 20,000 meals across a weekend takes far more than good food — it takes stock, power, refrigeration and forecasting, all coordinated in a field. Here is what sat behind the counter at Download 2026:

‍ ‍

  • An 18-metre, six-brand food court with its own kitchen and service line.

  • Two 44-tonne articulated fridge/freezer trailers on site, holding stock at temperature during a heat wave.

  • A self-sufficient power and gas setup, because festival sites rarely offer the infrastructure a kitchen needs.

  • A restructured, three-stage service line — a chef cooking, a manager building and quality-checking, and a server taking payment and passing food — designed to move a customer through in 10 to 15 seconds at peak.

  • Live stock forecasting, ordering event-by-event so nothing was over-bought and almost nothing had to be transported home.

‍ ‍

This is what turnkey catering means in practice: we bring the whole operation, and the organiser doesn't have to coordinate a dozen separate traders to feed a crowd.

‍ ‍

One caterer or many food traders? Why festivals choose a single food court operator

‍ ‍For an organiser, the choice is between managing many independent traders — many contracts, many contacts, many points of failure — or one supplier who runs the entire food court. At Download, the value of a single operator was summed up perfectly by the festival's artist liaison, negotiating the headliner catering with us on the day:

"One phone number. It's all ready at the same time."

‍ ‍

That is the whole point of the model. One team takes the brief, coordinates the cuisines, manages the compliance and delivers everything to one standard — so the people running the event have one relationship to manage instead of ten. It's why organisers increasingly bring in a single food court operator rather than assembling a patchwork of individual vendors.

‍ ‍

Feeding Download's headliners on six hours' notice

‍ ‍

Midway through the weekend, the festival's artist liaison asked whether we could cater for the headliners and their crews as well — the bands, their teams and everyone with them. The order was confirmed in the afternoon for food needed that night: roughly six hours, on top of a full public service already in flow.

We said yes. Across the weekend we catered around 300 additional meals for Limp Bizkit, Guns N' Roses, Linkin Park and Scooter and their crews — none of it in the original plan, all of it delivered without pulling the public offer off track.

‍ For any event organiser, that is the real question behind every booking: not "is the food good?" but "can they absorb the unexpected on the day?" Being asked, at short notice, to feed some of the biggest names in music worldwide — and doing it while serving thousands of other guests — is the clearest answer we can give.

‍ ‍

How do you cater for every dietary requirement at a festival?

‍ ‍At scale, dietary requirements aren't an add-on, they're built into the menu from the start. At Download we served vegetarian and vegan options throughout, with dairy-free routes through the menu for guests with allergies and off-menu vegan dishes (including vegan pizza) whenever guests asked. Across our events more widely, gluten-free are catered as standard too, with halal options available on request. Allergen and compliance management is handled in-house, not outsourced — which is exactly what a 100,000-capacity crowd and a demanding festival operator require. With our live allergen-tracker available from a QR code printed for the public to scan, all monitored and adjusted daily to account for any changes in ingredients from our supply chain.

‍ ‍

When things go wrong: power, gas and contingency

‍ ‍

The mark of a professional caterer isn't that nothing goes wrong — at a festival, something always does — it's what happens next. At Download we worked through:

‍ ‍

  • Repeated generator failures, later traced to contaminated fuel in the site supply feeding our units — not an overload on our side. We kept food safe by holding it in gas-heated pans and sous vide while the site electricians resolved it.

  • A full gas-safety rebuild the night before opening. Live Nation's gas regulations required automatic shut-off on every burner; ours didn't all have it, so we bought and piped in new compliant equipment overnight.

  • A backup stock strategy — a second load of stock held ready with our suppliers, delivered to site at 5am on the busiest morning, so we could scale up without over-committing cash or cold storage.

‍ ‍

‍ Running Download while running a full week of events

‍ ‍

Download wasn't the only thing we were running that week. At the same time, our teams were delivering catering across:

‍ ‍

  • Bath Racecourse and other race meetings for our other Arena Racing Company clients

  • Brighton Racecourse and Worcester Racecourse

  • Tamworth Food Festival

  • Waterside Market — the ten-brand food court we host weekly

  • A corporate catering booking of several hundred meals

‍ ‍

Running several large events on the same weekend is only possible with the depth of a full operation behind it — cold stores, a fleet of trucks, an operations team, a finance team forecasting stock and labour, and management assigned to each site. It's the difference between an independent trader and a scalable catering business.

‍ ‍

The honest numbers: what a festival like Download actually costs

‍ ‍

Most caterers won't tell you this, so we will. Festivals are high-volume and low-margin, and Download was no exception. It cost around £120,000 to stage

‍ ‍

We share these figures for a reason. Our audience trusts Street Food Diaries because it's honest about how this industry really works, and that honesty is the same reason clients trust us with their events. We know what things cost, we know how to make an event profitable — for us and for the organiser we work for — and we don't hide the mechanics.

‍ ‍

Why does a West Midlands base make national festival catering work?

‍ ‍

Feast Streat is based in the West Midlands, and that central UK location is a significant logistical advantage. From a single, centrally located HQ — with cold stores, trucks, and operations, management, finance and marketing teams under one roof — we can supply events from one end of the country to the other. Download, a full slate of racecourses, a food festival and a weekly market, all in one week, all run from one base. Being in the middle of the country is exactly what makes national coverage practical.

‍ ‍

The takeaway

‍ ‍

Download Festival 2026 is the clearest case study we have of what Feast Streat does: bring an entire, self-sufficient food court to a major event, feed 20,000 people to a high standard, absorb the unexpected — including the biggest bands at the world on six hours' notice — and do it while running a week of other events, honestly and profitably. If you're planning an event where the catering can't be the thing that goes wrong, that's the standard we build to.
